Quarterfinals Recaps

USA 33 Italy 12

The world champions’ quarterback Vanina Krouch shared four touchdowns between Izzy Geraci and Madison Fulford, while London Jenkins also got in on the act as the United States fired 33 points without reply in a dominating win. Italy enjoyed some consolation as quarterback Carolina Sgroi hit Alice Fimiani for a late score then caught a six-point score herself on a pass from Margherita Germinetti.

Canada 32 Japan 27

Canada and Japan played out a thriller as Canada recovered from a 14-point deficit to win on the game’s final play with only two seconds remaining as they trailed by a point.

Japan raced to a 13-0 lead as Chihiro Iwata targeted Yuri Nakahata and Yurika Rakakawa for early touchdowns and led 20-6 at the interval after a defiant defensive display kept Canada at bay. Canada clawed their way back into contention as an interception by Laurence Caron followed a Laura Molimard touchdown to shift the momentum.

Sara Parker then found Caroline Moquin Joubert for a touchdown and a two-point conversion to level the score at 20-20. Japan stalled deep inside the red zone and Canada’s response was a drive downfield and a second Molimard score inside the two-minute warning. A Moe Miyake touchdown edged Japan in front by a point before Canada at the clock and kept their nerve to seal a dramatic victory.

Austria 40 Great Britain 28

European bragging rights went the way of Austria as the world’s fourth-ranked team raced to an early 13-point advantage and never relinquished their lead despite a determined effort from European champions Great Britain.

Karoline Kugler scored four touchdowns, reeling in a hat trick through the air and one rushing, while youngster Magdalena Helm twice found the end zone as Austria quarterback Saskia Stribrny threw for five touchdowns. Great Britain wide receiver Emily Kemp impressed with three receiving touchdowns from quarterback Jess Allen and one score on the ground.

Mexico 40 China 0

Mexico continued where they left off after winning Group B with another convincing victory, beating host China 40-0. Mexico scored 20 unanswered first half points as Diana Flores and Tania Rincon each threw touchdown passes and Flores caught one herself from Rincon’s pass. Silvia Contreras totaled four receiving touchdowns in the win and Rincon had four touchdown passes. China finally got the ball into the Mexico end zone on the last play of the game, but Victoria Chavez came up with an interception.
