Africa Flag Day 1 Women

History was made in Egypt on Friday, while on Saturday the IFAF women’s flag football champions of Africa will be crowned.

Three nations proudly represented Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria at the Club One Maadi Stadium in Cairo with all still in medal contention going into tomorrow’s playoffs having each posted a 1-1 record in the group stage.

Zeafari Meryam of Morocco's recorded the first women’s touchdown in African international competition history to inspire a 27-6 victory over Egypt.

“It was an amazing win,” she said. “It’s my first time participating in an international tournament with my country, Morocco, and alongside these amazing players. Hopefully, we make it to the finals. I’d like to thank everyone who helped us get here, especially Coach Fouzia. We want to prove ourselves, show who we are, and the best is yet to come.”

The Moroccans were then defeated 38-6 by Nigeria, who in turn lost 19-13 to Egypt but advanced to the Gold Medal Game that will be played at 5.30pm local time on Saturday by virtue of winning the points differential tiebreaker. Egypt and Morocco will meet in a playoff at 11.15am to decide which nation meets Nigeria in the final.

“This is a dream come true,” said Egypt’s Farah Elmasry. “It has been my dream since I was in school to represent my country in sports. All of us who play the game have a real passion for it, and it feels a bit surreal. It is difficult to comprehend because the crowd was cheering for Egypt, and it was amazing.”

Center Sonia Mouimen of Egypt’s upcoming opponent Morocco said: “I have confidence in my team. We are the lions of Morocco, so we are going to go up again and will play our best game.”

Ali Rafik, president and founder of EFAF, The Egyptian Federation of American Football, welcomed players and coaches from 11 teams representing eight nations, dignitaries and supporters to the Club One Maadi Stadium in Cairo.

“It is a great honor and a proud moment to welcome you all to the very first African Flag Football Championship, hosted here in the heart of Africa, the vibrant and historic city of Cairo,” he said. “This event marks more than the start of a tournament. It’s the beginning of a new journey for our sport across the continent.

“Today, we gather. Not just to compete, but to unite through teamwork, sportsmanship, and a shared passion for the game.”
