Hot on the heels of the announcement that the NFL will play a regular season game at the Arena Corinthians in São Paulo in 2024, Rio Preto Weilers won its first Brazilian American Football Championship, beating hosts Galo Futebol Americano 16-7.
Both teams reached the national final undefeated with six wins with Galo earning home field advantage, but Rio took control on the game’s opening possession with a touchdown by Wellington Fidelis. Kicker Ganso tagged on the extra point and then increased the visitors’ lead to 13-0 with two second quarter field goals.
Victor Holden reeled a pass from Preto Weilers quarterback Lucas Caravita to pull Rio within six points before halftime. After a tense scoreless third quarter another Ganso field goal secured victory for the team from São José do Rio Preto.
