Close games highlighted a thrilling opening day at the IFAF Flag Football World Championships Düsseldorf 2026 as most tournament favourites claimed pole position in the race for playoff places, which will be decided when the action resumes on Friday.
Roared on by a boisterous home crowd at the city’s custom-built Flag Football Complex, host Germany recovered from an agonizing one-score loss to powerhouse Mexico in the men’s competition by beating Switzerland to get their challenge back on track. Six teams remain unbeaten with American Samoa, Canada, Mexico and Italy topping their respective groups. Defending champion, the United States, was pushed all the way by Israel, winning 50-38 as the first official Olympic qualifying event in flag football got underway.
In the women’s tournament, Great Britain dramatically edged China 26-25 to eliminate the Asia-Oceania champions and on Friday at 10.30am will clash with Austria for top spot in the highly competitive Group C. They are among six teams boasting a perfect 2-0 record, including the United States and world number one Mexico.
