IFAF World Flag 2026 Men’s Group C: Mexico, Switzerland, Germany, Brazil
Group C provides an intriguing rematch between Mexico and Switzerland after the European nation was the surprise package of the 2024 world championships and beat the 2021 silver medalists 41-35 to clinch the bronze medal in Finland.
Germany will have high hopes of progressing to the knockout stages as the host nation, while Brazil looks to turn the tables on teams that have beaten them the last time they met in competition.
Germany will face Switzerland for the first time since beating them 48-19 at the European Championships in 2017 in Denmark. Switzerland last met Americas qualifier Brazil at the 2021 IFAF world championships in Israel, winning 37-13 in the group stages.
Mexico inflicted Germany’s only defeat in the group stages of the 2021 competition, while their last meeting with Brazil was a 50-26 win at the 2023 IFAF Americas championships.
“We are focusing on the gold medal and that’s the mindset we’ve had since we very first started in this process,” says Mexico receiver Guillermo Villaboas.
The Basics:
An IFAF world championships gold has thus far proved elusive for Mexico’s men who have finished in the top four during each of the last six tournaments. Silver was won in 2014 in Italy and 2021. The IFAF Americas 2025 title was shared with the United States and Mexico is ranked third in the world.
Two years ago, the success of Switzerland was the story that had everyone talking at the 2024 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Finland. Ranked 14th in the world going into the tournament, Switzerland turned the form book upside down in the knockout stages, first shocking seventh-ranked Panama in the Round of 16 and then Canada in the quarterfinals. After a semifinals defeat to the United States, the team that had lost the 13th place consolation game to Thailand two years earlier rocked Mexico to claim the bronze medal.
Germany has twice finished as runners-up, winning silver at the inaugural IFAF Flag Football World Championships in 2002, losing 6-0 to Austria. Two years later they were edged 26-24 again by Austria in the championship game. Germany was crowned IFAF European champion in 2023.
One of the lasting memories from the 2025 IFAF Americas Flag was Brazil’s men claiming a narrow and nervy 7-0 win over Argentina to secure fifth place at the continental championships and with it a place at this summer’s IFAF World Flag 2026. An emotional postgame celebration united the victorious players and coaches and their female counterparts who had themselves booked their trip to Düsseldorf that same afternoon.
