IFAF World Flag 2026 Nation Profile Switzerland

If anyone knows how to spring a surprise at a major tournament, it is the Swiss.

Two years ago, the success of Switzerland was the story that had everyone talking at the 2024 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Finland. Ranked 14th in the world going into the tournament, Switzerland turned the form book upside down in the knockout stages, first shocking seventh-ranked Panama in the Round of 16 and then Canada in the quarterfinals. After a semifinals defeat to the United States, the team that had lost the 13th place consolation game to Thailand two years earlier rocked Mexico to claim the bronze medal.

By those standards, finishing sixth overall at Euro Flag 2025 after a fifth-place playoff loss to Israel might be considered a disappointment, but qualification for IFAF World Flag 2026 was assured. If upset-happy Switzerland shows up in Düsseldorf, then watch out world.

In Opposition in Düsseldorf

In Group C, there will be an immediate rematch with Mexico, the powerhouse Switzerland beat 41-35 to clinch the bronze medal in Finland. The hosts will be in opposition for the first time since a 48-19 loss to Germany at the European Championships in 2017 in Denmark. Switzerland last met Americas qualifier Brazil at the 2021 IFAF world championships in Israel, winning 37-13 in the group stages.

Switzerland is the reigning bronze medalist, a far cry from finishing 14th overall in 2021. That surprise success marked the first time Switzerland had competed in the medal rounds on the world stage.

The Coach

Switzerland men’s head coach Urs Fässler has been playing flag football for more than 20 years and serves as a player-coach. He has also coached tackle football in different positions for more than a decade, allowing him to understand both sides of the game and to help players grow on and off the field. He coached Switzerland to third place overall two years ago.

In Preparation

Switzerland’s preparation began the month after Euro Flag 2025 with October tryouts for the national team, followed by a series of training sessions. In February, Marc Germann was appointed as Head of Flag Football with the Swiss American Football Federation. An active flag football player with the Blackbucks Bern for many years and the head of Popular Sports in Flag Football, he directs development together with the SAFV Board and the Flag Board.
