The Cameroon American Football Federation has expanded its youth program to the Littoral Region of the country in the first of seven initiatives that will culminate with more than 50 schools including flag football in their PE curriculum and taking part in competitive games for the 2026/2027 season.
The Douala U15 and U13 series took center stage and will compete in a combine in May at the American School of Douala. The momentum in youth flag football in the nation comes on the back of the participation of the Cameroon American Football Federation at the IFAF/NFL Coaching clinic in Accra, Ghana.
Speaking to school authorities and teachers at the American school in Douala, the President of the Cameroon American Football Federation Mr. Awasum Junior emphasized the importance of girls participating in sports and encouraged schools and colleges to adopt flag football in their schools.
“Flag football helps to promote healthy behaviors and athletics programs for the development of young talents both socially and competitively,” he said.
Flag football in the first quarter of 2026 has reached more than 10,000 youth in five regions of Cameroon with special tailored promotional and competitive events.
In 2025, Egypt hosted the first African flag football continental championships with the winners Nigeria advancing to this summer’s IFAF World Flag 2026, which serves as a first qualifier for the LA28 Olympic Games. Cameroon’s men’s team finished fifth overall having made history when they were the first African nation to compete in the IFAF World Championships in Finland in 2024.
