In October of 2023 it was announced at the IOC Session in Mumbai, India, that Flag Football would feature on the programme of the Olympic Games in 2028, held in Los Angeles.
The competition, scheduled to be held at Exposition Park alongside the famous LA Coliseum, would provide the world’s best athletes the chance to compete on the biggest stage in sport.
In Los Angeles, 6 female teams and 6 male teams will compete for gold.
The United States of America will qualify as host nation.
In 2026, the top 2 teams (excluding the United States) from the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany, will qualify.
In 2027 national teams will compete in the IFAF Continental Flag Football Championships. The top 2 from each Continental Championship (excluding those nations that have already qualified for LA28) will qualify for a final Olympic Qualifying Series tournament in 2028 at which the top 3 nations will complete the line-up in Los Angeles.
Taking place between July 15 and July 22, Flag Football is anticipated to be one of the hottest tickets at the Olympic Games.
