Officials perform a vital role in the sport, enabling participants to compete within the spirit of the sport through the effective application of its rules and laws.
IFAF has established a process by which Technical Officials are regulated in delivering at IFAF-sanctioned events. This encompasses the identification and selection of Technical Officials for international competition through to the Code of Conduct.
Consistent, high-quality officiating is fundamental to the integrity and credibility of international competition.
IFAF is committed to appointing officials who demonstrate the highest standards of competence, impartiality, and professionalism, ensuring that every fixture, whether flag or tackle, is conducted fairly and in accordance with the Federation’s rules of play.
Officials are selected and assigned through a structured process that takes into account experience, certification, and performance at previous international events, helping to maintain consistency across competitions and reinforce confidence among participating teams and Member Federations.
IFAF seeks to ensure that its global tournament structure allows for emerging officials to showcase their talents alongside more seasoned officials.
To support this standard, IFAF is building ongoing officiating development and accreditation pathways, providing officials with the training, assessment, and mentorship needed to progress through international levels.
Officials are expected to remain up to date with current rules, interpretations and mechanics, participate in pre-tournament briefings and clinics, and adhere to a strict code of conduct both on and off the field of play.
IFAF is equally committed to protecting the integrity of competition, requiring officials to uphold robust standards around the prevention of manipulation of competition, and to operate within a framework that safeguards both participants and officials themselves. The health and wellbeing of officials is treated with the same importance as that of athletes, with appropriate support in place to ensure they are able to perform their role safely and to a high standard throughout international events.
