Puerto Rico tops both the men’s and women’s tournaments after the opening day of action at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Flag Football Regional Championships being played from June 18-21 in El Salvador.

The host nation also boasts an unbeaten 2-0 record in the women’s competition, matching Puerto Rico, and the two nations will meet to contest top spot at 12.30pm when Friday’s action switches to the Estadio Las Delicias in Santa Tecia.

There are four men’s teams all with a 1-1 record leading the chase to topple the Caribbean pace setter with all still to play for ahead of Saturday’s knockout stages.

In the men’s tournament the opening game of the round robin at Cuscatlan Stadium in San Salvador saw Puerto Rico put 38 unanswered points past the Cayman Islands and beat Jamaica 24-6. Nicaragua’s participation was delayed by inclement weather delaying their flights but after forfeiting the opening game, they pushed El Salvador all the way in a narrow four-point loss. The Cayman Islands bounced back to beat Dominican Republic 27-6.

In the women’s tournament the opening game of the round robin tournament at Cuscatlan Stadium in San Salvador featured a narrow 33-26 win for the host over Jamaica and El Salvador’s second victory came over Nicaragua. Jamaica recovered to beat the Cayman Islands 39-6 while Puerto Rico’s successes came over the Cayman Islands in a 40-point shutout and a forfeit over delayed Nicaragua.
