Two of flag football’s most iconic and successful female athletes Diana Flores and Ashlea Klam star in Prime Video’s release The Future Is Flag, a definitive documentary exploring the rapid evolution and rising global stakes of women’s flag football.
The Future Is Flag is available now on Prime Video and is directed by filmmaker, showrunner, and executive producer, Monica Medellin (Surf Girls, Prime Video).
The film tracks Flores and Klam from the high-pressure environment of the 2025 World Games in China to the IFAF Americas Flag continental championships in Panama, supported by footage licensed from IFAF. Viewers will witness the intense preparation required to compete at the highest level while exploring the personal hurdles both athletes have overcome to get to where they are today.
Today, both athletes top the rankings in women’s flag football, anchoring one of the sport’s most closely contested international rivalries. Flores has led the world’s top-ranked Mexico women's national flag football team to a pair of gold-medal finishes at the World Games, cementing their status as defending world champions and a global leader. Klam, meanwhile, was among the captains as USA won back-to-back IFAF championships in 2023 and 2024, maintaining one of the most consistently successful programs in the sport.
As flag football prepares for its historic Olympic debut at the LA28 Games, Medellin provides an intimate look at the athletes transforming the sport from a recreational pastime into a legitimate professional pursuit.
“Today, flag football is a global movement,” said Flores. “Ashlea and I may line up on opposite sides, but we’re united in making sure every girl who follows us knows she can do this, too. I’m proud to share our story as we continue bringing new audiences to the game and pushing the sport forward.”
Klam added: “People used to see flag football as recreational, but there is nothing 'casual' about the work we put in. I’m so excited for people to get an inside look at the real, raw intensity of the sport. We’re finally being recognized as the elite athletes we are, and we’re just getting started.”
Director Monica Medellin said of the production: “Our film sets a new standard as the first women-led project in this space, both in front of and behind the camera, created to capture the authenticity of these athletes while giving them the platform and spotlight they deserve. I couldn’t be more excited to partner with SMAC Entertainment and Under Armour’s Lab96 Studios, two companies committed to championing these athletes and amplifying their stories.”
Tyler Rutstein, SVP of Global Brand and Americas Marketing at Under Armour added: “Our mission is to empower the next generation of athletes, and few sports are evolving as rapidly or as powerfully as women's flag football. This film is a tribute to that and represents a key pillar in Under Armour’s larger storytelling strategy. We’re moving beyond the game to capture the authentic, human narratives of the athletes who are redefining sport on a global scale.”
SMAC Entertainment’s previous film and TV projects include the critically acclaimed documentary BS High (MAX), hit docuseries Coach Prime (Prime Video), The Coach Vick Experience (BET), Evolution of the Black Quarterback (Prime Video), It’s In the Game: Madden NFL (Prime Video) and the feature film The Underdoggs (MGM). Their upcoming projects include the 3-part docuseries Prime Time (Netflix), in addition to the highly anticipated movie Madden (MGM), starring Nicolas Cage, Christian Bale, Will Ferrell and Shane Gillis.
