IFAF Africa
Club Consultation
11 October 2021
IFAF has today launched the first phase of a consultation with nations and interested third parties on the future of international club competition.
This consultation has two focal areas:
The first part is the exploration of an IFAF-sanctioned Club Championship framework for flag football. This could take the form of annual, bi-annual or quadrennial events at regional, continental and / or global level. A tournament format that could see for example, over a long weekend, a club be crowned IFAF Regional, Continental or World Champion.
The second part relates to IFAF-sanctioned Club Championship frameworks for tackle football.
As with the Flag programme, significant research is needed here to make sure that we build structures that reflect the needs of our members and allows for clubs, federations and IFAF to benefit through the realisation of a long-term focus. We need to be able to work around national federation championships and the international calendar; we need to ensure we have meaningful competition which takes into account the strengths of domestic leagues; the finances of teams, and the types of player available. In some parts of the world this may take a traditional format, in others we may look at 6 v 6 or a smaller variant.
Competitions may be delivered by IFAF or via accredited third parties.
At the heart of this process three things will be paramount:
IFAF must be recognised as the sole international governing body and its governing documents, from discipline to anti-doping, must be referenced in any competition regulations.
The integrity of our member federation's competitions must be sacrosanct and national federation sanctioning should form the basis for competition entry.
If and where third parties are involved in competition delivery, there must be a contract in place between IFAF and the third party that clearly defines the relationship and provides clarity as to the business and football operations of the third party and any financial arrangements.
The first phase of consultation will run until January 31, 2022. Feedback will be consolidated and ideas shaped to guide more detailed discussions with members.
National Federations should lead discussions with their domestic clubs. Any other interested parties should write to clubs@americanfootball.sport
