He became head coach for the 2018 FFWC in Panama, making this his eighth year in the position and through flag football has made friends all around the world.
In China, he played American football for two years with the Shanghai Warriors from 2015-2016 and inn Japan, even during his playing career, he coached youth and women’s teams, so has approximately 25 years of coaching experience in total.
What are the goals for your team in this tournament?
The overall standard of flag football in Asia has been rising rapidly. There is a phrase in the ancient Chinese classic The Book of Songs (Shijing) — “有匪君子、如切如磋、如琢如磨,” which means “a gentleman refines himself through mutual learning and sharpening with others.” This expression is also well known in Japan and represents the idea of growing stronger together.
With 12 Asian nations and here from Oceania competing at this championship, our goal is to contribute to elevating the level of flag football across the entire Asia-Oceania region through mutual competition and respect.
What will be the strengths of your team, and which players should we watch for?
Our biggest strength is our team unity, which we have built since November of last year. We gather seven days every month to train together, and this consistent commitment has forged strong bonds and shared purpose.
The player to watch is our quarterback, Taniguchi, an outstanding young QB who is leading Japan’s next generation. He will challenge himself and inspire others at this continental championship.
What do you think of the group you have been drawn into?
The Philippines has been actively developing the sport, hosting various club tournaments and improving steadily in recent years. Hong Kong has also been establishing a solid foundation with clear program missions and youth development initiatives. We will play both nations with the utmost respect.
I hope our games in this tournament will become an opportunity to deepen friendship and mutual understanding through flag football.
