During the buildup to the 2025 IFAF Americans Flag Football Championships, IFAF has posed three questions to the head coaches of the men’s and women’s teams about to compete for continental glory.
USA women’s head coach Saaid Mortazavi is in his third year with the squad after joining the program in 2023. Under his guidance USA has put together two gold medal winning performances, first at the 2023 Americas continentals and then the IFAF World Championships in Lahti, Finland, last year. Prior to leading the US women's national team, he served as assistant coach of the Panamanian men's national team in 2021 and head coach in 2022.
How do you lift the squad following such a close and dramatic defeat at The World Games?
It’s about moving forward with clarity, hunger, and belief in who we are. It was a matchup between two great teams that came down to the final play. We’ve reviewed the film, addressed the important areas, and taken lessons from every moment. I know we’ll be ready to compete against the best in the Americas when we get to Panama.
Canada pushed you all the way in Chengdu and you face them in the group stages. How tough is this competition compared to two years ago? The competition across the world is increasing, and Canada is no exception. We understand that teams are closing the gap, and it raises the bar for everyone. The margins in international competition are smaller than ever before. Each game demands our best.
How would you describe the rivalry with Mexico, which was already fierce but now includes the outcome of The World Games?
The World Games final was the fifth consecutive gold medal match between our teams. We know them well, they know us well, and we have tremendous respect for each other. Our games are always intense and competitive. Together, I believe our teams have driven the sport's growth while constantly pushing each other to improve.
