American football continues to develop in Georgia and the nation’s latest successful initiative saw a men’s select flag football team travel to the Emirates to participate in a tournament where they faced teams representing numerous emerging nations.
Georgia won four games and came home with the silver medal after losing a close final against Dubai as Lasha Ungiadze was recognized as the Offensive MVP of the tournament.
The competition included teams from Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and hosts Abu Dhabi.
Georgia has held local championships for more than 10 years and it’s national team stepped onto the international stage in 2023 at the IFAF European Flag Football Championships and last summer at the 2024 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.
This September, Georgia will be among 24 men’s teams competing at Euro Flag 2025 at the Val-de-Marne Interdepartmental Sports Park in Choisy-le-Roi, Val-de-Marne, in the southeast suburbs of Paris. Drawn into group A, they will face the continent’s top-ranked team and world championships silver medalist Austria, Great Britain, Spain, Netherlands and Croatia.
