Group C features one of two all-European matchups at the 2024 IFAF Flag Football World Championships and is headlined by current European champion Germany.
Silver medalists in the inaugural world championships back in 2002 and again two years later, Germany takes on a Great Britain team that won a Euros bronze in 2017 when they beat upcoming group opponent Sweden. Newcomers to the world stage Georgia made their international competition bow last summer.
Germany and Sweden met as recently as the group stages in August in Ireland when Coach Florian Berrenberg’s charges won 49-19 on their way to lifting the European crown. Germany headed into the playoffs as one of four unbeaten teams and having edged Israel 36-35 to then win the gold medal with a victory over Austria.
“Now we have to go to the world championship to defend the European championship and we have high hopes against the great teams from overseas, so that’s our goal,” said quarterback Benjamin Klever. “We’ll keep improving our game. That’s what we've been doing the last three years since we started with this coaching group.”
Great Britain lost in the quarterfinals of the Euros last summer, falling by a point to eventual silver medalists Austria, while Sweden has twice finished fourth in the continental tournament.
Unexpected visa issues caused Georgia to take on European opponents in Ireland with a squad short of the allowed 12-man roster and they were unable to secure a win, but a full-strength Georgian team expects to challenge beyond their IFAF world ranking of 38th.
“The team has been preparing for a long time and will definitely fight for high results,” says David Palavandishvili of the American Football Federation of Georgia.
