IFAF World
Congress 2024
18 July 2024
The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) has confirmed it will welcome delegates from its member federations to Lausanne, Switzerland when it hosts its annual Congress on the 7th of December 2024.
Following a historic year for the international federation when flag football was added to the Sport Programme of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028, IFAF has confirmed this year’s Congress will take place in the Olympic capital at the Olympic Museum.
The 2024 Congress will be held as IFAF continues to establish itself as a key member of the international sporting community, including being granted Associate Membership of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) and full membership status of the International World Games Associations (IWGA).
The agenda for IFAF’s Lausanne Congress will feature reflections on the IFAF U20 World Junior Football Championship in Edmonton, Canada, as well as a the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Lahti, Finland, which is set to break all championship records with the largest number of teams and athletes from around the world when it kicks off on August 25.
Delegates representing the global American football family will also look ahead to the 2025 Continental Flag Football Championships and the next stage of flag football’s extraordinary international growth, with 20 million players in 100 countries already playing the highly accessible and inclusive format and women and girls driving the fastest growth.
As members of the extended IFAF Board, leading figures from the NFL will join the Congress again – reaffirming the ongoing collaborative efforts between IFAF and NFL to develop the sport globally and as preparations for flag football’s Olympic debut at LA28 move forward.
IFAF President Pierre Trochet said: “2024 is set to be landmark year with three World Championships and an increase in the number of nations seeking membership of IFAF. We look
forward to welcoming the global American football family to the Olympic capital when we host the IFAF Congress on Saturday the 7th of December.”
“There is no better place for our member federations to come together in celebration, to recognise our recent achievements, review a historic Championship in Edmonton, what is set to be a record- breaking IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Lahti and look ahead to what promises to be a pivotal period for the sport globally.”
Lausanne Olympic Capital Foundation Director, Sebastien Griesmar, said: "This year, the City of Lausanne is celebrating the 30th anniversary of being designated as “The Olympic Capital.” We are pleased and honored to welcome IFAF, as a new Olympic federation, to close our celebratory year with us at the occasion of its 2024 Congress. The Olympic Movement is evolving and the international sports landscape is changing. We are proud of being at the centre of this transformation, helping federations connect, exchange, and grow together. Welcome to the Olympic
Capital, IFAF, and we hope to collaborate again in the future."
