The early game of the day saw the Mexican national team play its first fixture having experienced delays in arriving.

Mexico, took on Australia in the placement games. The Mexicans took matters into their own hands the minute they stepped in the field; not giving Australia enough space to develop their game. A 79yard touchdown pass from QB Maria Cruz to running back Andrea Romero following a 79 yard drive set up the tone early in the first quarter for the Mexicans. QB Cruz was just getting hot. She maintained her accuracy throughout the half, delivering touchdown passes to Pacheco and Barbosa to secure a 22-0 lead. Australia struck back early in the second half through Casey Byrne but the green and gold failed to build momentum leaving the Cruz-Pacheco combination time to add a couple more touchdowns and lead Mexico to a convincing 34-6 victory. In winning, Mexico secured a place in the 5th / 6th ranking game on Sunday where they will face Germany who defeated Sweden 6-0 in a game built on defense. The first half of the game between reigning champions the United States and hosts Finland sent shockwaves around the world. The United States, the dominant force in women's football since the inaugural championship, trailed to a Finland team that out thought and out fought the champions. A 10-7 lead for the hosts was well-deserved and set the stage for a second half that could have rewritten history. Whilst Finland maintained their pace and discipline, the United States were able to move through the gears, shutting out the Finland offense and scoring 21 unanswered points to win 28-10. If people thought that the drama of that game would be hard to match, Canada and Great Britain did their best to prove that wrong. The two nations went toe-to-toe with Great Britain securing victory in the dying seconds of the game over three-time silver medalists Canada. A “pick-six” interception and touchdown by Lucy Peaty followed by a rushing touchdown from Sydney Green give the Lions the edge at the halfway mark. Canada were able to level matters in the third quarter before Great Britain's Siobhan Walker received a pin-point throw from Green with seconds to spare and secure a 20-13 victory and place in the gold medal game.
